New Delhi – Dressed as a giant condom and holding a heart-shaped sign that reads, "Dogs Can't Use Condoms. Spay and Neuter", a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India will hand out animal birth control leaflets in Delhi on Thursday in advance of Valentine's Day. PETA's goal: To help Delhi residents brush up on their ABCs – animal birth control:

Date:      Thursday, 11 February

Time:      12 noon

Place:     Jantar Mantar, Delhi

In Delhi and across India, unwanted animals are often abandoned on the streets to join stray dogs and cats who struggle to survive. Many of these animals starve to death, are injured or killed in fights, are hit by vehicles or are abused. Countless others are kept in animal shelters because there aren't enough good homes for them. Every time someone buys a dog or cat from a breeder or pet store, a homeless animal roaming the streets or waiting in an animal shelter loses a chance at finding a good home.

The solution is as easy as ABC: animal birth control. Spaying one female dog can prevent 67,000 births in six years, and spaying one female cat can prevent 420,000 births in seven years. When people refuse to spay or neuter their companion animals, dogs and cats suffer and end up abandoned on the streets or dumped at animal shelters. Sterilised animals also live longer, healthier lives and are less likely to roam, fight or bite.

"Millions of dogs and cats die on the streets every year or languish in animal shelters because there are not enough good homes for them", says PETA India senior campaigns coordinator Nikunj Sharma. "PETA urges everyone to always spay or neuter animals at home and in the neighbourhood, and if you're considering adding a dog or cat to your family, never buy – always adopt a homeless animal."
